Sacred Games season 1 saw Sartaj Singh get closer to the truth

Recap Season 1:

In the first season, we saw Mumbai gangster, Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) contact a failed and over weight cop, Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) to warn him regarding a deadly threat looming over the city and he just has 25 days to solve it.

In the process, we go back in time and learn about Gaitonde’s rise to power in the underworld, as we tried to join the pieces of the puzzle and how everything led to him being a part of the massive plan set to destroy Mumbai.

As they converse over the phone, Gaitonde tells Sartaj all about his childhood, how he killed his own mother and then fled to Mumbai, embracing a life of crime. Very briefly are we shown the death of Jojo played skill-fully by Suvreen Chawla, in the pilot’s opening scene.

Gaitonde shoots himself in the first episode of the first season itself, but its with the help of those calls, Sartaj tries to unravel the mystery that he has left behind for him.

That season ended with a cliffhanger, where Sartaj finds Gaitonde’s “third father” aka Guruji (Pankaj Tripathi) locked up in a bunker.

Season 2 : Review

A few minutes into the first episode of Seasonand you will still trying to figure out what was going on and where the story is heading.  But once the episode ends…you get there, you have already got a good grip of the story.

The scene opens and introduces us to the tired and sleepy Ganesh Gaithonde slowly coming to his senses. if you remember, the last sequence, he was being rescued by some mysterious masked men from the jail, Gaithonde’s freedom now comes with an explanation…sorry a huge price

Having mysteriously been shipped off to Mombasa in Kenya and now working as a Government pawn under Kusum Devi Yadav — NIA agent played by the talented Amruta Subhash.

Gaithonde’s storyline in the first couple of episodes focuses on his thirst for revenge against Issa and his love for the city of Mumbai.

Sacred Games

Much like the first season, the second season also shifts between Gaithonde and Sartaj Singh — the honest cop portrayed by Saif Ali Khan who is trying to save Mumbai from a disaster he is totally clueless about.

Frankly speaking, I was not expecting the story to conclude in season 2 we glide through four days of the remaining 13 in the first three episodes with Sartaj and his team engaged in a struggle for leads in connection to the Hizbuddin terror outfit.

On the other hand, Ganesh Gaithonde is building his own empire in Kenya, but he realises that he is no longer the The one and only supreme God and that there are bigger forces at play here.

He strikes up a love-hate relationship relationship with Jojo, who he speaks to over the phone in Mumbai. He even goes on to make a film on his life, after struggling with insecurities of being irrelevant. There, he gives Jameela (Elnaaz Nourozi) her first break, ushering her into the world of Bollywood.

After all his attempts fail, this is when Gaithonde gets his first taste of spirituality and gets introduced to his third father. Taking up on Trivedi’s and Dilbaugh Singh’s suggestion, Gaithonde meets Guruji, played by Pankaj Tripathi, who seems to have all the answers to his problem.

In the first season, the only time we saw Guruji was in the last scene, when Sartaj discovers him in a bunker. However, we have heard about him from Gaitonde, who refers to him as his third father.

Sacred Games 2 review

But in this season, there’s more to Guruji and it will shock you. Both Kalki Koechlin who plays the character Batya Abelman and Pankaj Tripathi add a lot of layers and a lingering sense of curiosity to  this Season.

Sartaj meets Batya in the ashram, where he goes undercover and pretends to be a divorcee looking for peace. She heads the total operations since Guruji is dead in the current timeline ( will remind you of Sheela ). Sartaj tries his best to follow routes and clues given by Gaitonde and get hold of the final plan.

Sacred Games season 2 review.

The pace of this season is quite slow and you need to have patience in-order to sit through the ending and get hold of the exact intrinsic details about the conclusion.

While the Gaithonde saga almost goes through repeated transitional shifts , we find Sartaj Singh and his men, still stuck in the same interrogation room going on a wild goose chase. Last three episodes, the series tend to gain momentum and successfully rides us to the climax.

This season introduces the talented Ranvir Shorey who plays the notorious Shahid Khan but doesn’t get much screen space but he is alluded to often, as the one to ‘blow up India’

This season also will bring us closer to how Gaitonde and Guruji ‘s intimate relationship, how he was ultimately betrayed by his ‘teesra baap‘, and why he wants Sartaj to get hold of the entire situation.

Sacred Games season 2 review: Netflixs haphazard thriller takes on terrifying socio-political relevance

The women characters are the USP of Sacred Games Season 2 – right from the talented and attractive Amruta Subhash to the sexy Elnaaz Norouzi. Both the characters effortlessly make their presence feel in both the timelines bringing in necessary shifts in the whole body language.

A special mention goes to Surveen Chawla for portraying Jojo with a lot of ease and

skillfully.Image result for women characters in sacred games season 2

New director in the series, Neeraj Ghaywan brings about an unique visual interpretations to the Sartaj’s track  with multiple tracking shots and long takes that build up to shocking conclusions.

Anurag Kashyap like last time handles Gaitonde’s track with tone lighter than the first season. Nawazuddin and Saif Ali Khan plays the characters with great confidence and panache…you can’t expect anyone else to do the same.
